Backyard Remodel Project
Due to the rocky surface terrain in the shelter playground area, many families don’t utilize the swing set and other equipment. To make the area not only safer, but more inviting, we began a playground remodeling project.
Beginning in July, staff and volunteers kicked off the remodel by prepping and mulching the area surrounding the swing set. The remodel received another boost in early August when staff, clients and our DIY expert volunteer, Lynn McKee, worked on our planter project. Lowe’s allowed us to pick through a pile of pallets they no longer needed and we took on the task of recycling them into planters for an outdoor garden oasis. The bright colors and layout of the pallets add much needed dimension and cheerfulness to the once drab area.
The project continued into September as we utilized a team from George’s Inc., who volunteered through the United Way of the Northern Shenandoah Valley annual Day of Caring to complete the project. They took on the task of adding gravel and a walkway to the outlined yard area, refinishing some of the outdoor furniture and disinfecting contents from the garage.
We hope to finish off the project in the next month by adding perrenials in the planters and shrubbery to the newly mulched areas. Thank you to all the volunteers who participated to turn this idea into a reality!
